REALIZING YOU HAVEN'T BEEN A SUPPORTIVE FRIEND

In high school, Nick and I had become friends (along with our other friend Ryan) but college can kill friendships. Not us though. We knew we were friends for life. We could go months without talking and when we finally did, picked up right where we left off ignoring the passing of time. As we got older, we still stayed in touch but more time passed between conversations. We had drifted apart without even realizing it.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM STARTING A GRATITUDE JOURNAL

At first, I was really upset that I was having a hard time filling out three bullets. “Can I seriously not find 3 things to be thankful for?” Putting “a roof over my head,” or “clean water to drink,” felt too generic and almost like a copout. So being the creative problem solver that I am, I realized I was thinking too literally. I began to not focus on lofty examples of gratitude and think small and abstract.

I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR GETTING LAID OFF

Everyone teaches you skills for being an adult. They discuss the value of a solid work ethic. They explain the details of benefits, 401(K)s, and health insurance. ACCEPTING THE MICROBES I CANNOT CHANGE

After 27 years, you’d think I could recognize the symptoms of getting a cold. My throat feels like I swallowed razor blades. “Maybe my bedroom is too dry.” I can’t stop clearing my throat like an old man in Target. “I must not have had enough water today.” My nose and ears are more congested than an LA highway. “It must be allergies. Wait…do I even have allergies?” No, you fool. You have a cold. Again.

MAKING THE BEST OF A BAD HAIRCUT

After a surprisingly thorough consultation that included showing pictures, and explaining what I didn’t want, it was off to the sink. Getting shampooed at a salon is so relaxing. Your hair gets so clean and you don’t realize how much you enjoy scalp massages until you get one. During the cut, I had been scrolling through my phone and not paying attention. What should have been a collarbone-grazing lob ended up in a severely angled, “can I speak to your manager” helmet bob. Enter that sinking panic of “oh god what have I done?!”

TIPS FROM THE BADASS CO-FOUNDERS OF COOLHAUS

In 2008 Natasha Case and Freya Estreller had an idea to create ice cream sandwiches. But what would set them apart from the standard summertime mass produced chipwich? These would be all natural (sorry yellow no. 40 lovers), artisanal, and sustainably made. Freya admitted, “I Googled ‘hipster ice cream’ and got nothing so I was like this is it, I found it!”
